Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis announced the winning candidates shortly after the polls closed Wednesday afternoon. Barack Obama won the Democratic vote with 40.8 percent, and Rudolph Giuliani scored highest for the Republicans with 34.7 percent.

A total of 540 RIC students voted in the daylong primary.

Ballots and voting booths for the primary were provided by the Secretary of State’s Office and the Board of Elections.

Complete voting results for all candidates are as follows:

    Democrats

    Joe Biden 2.8%
    Hillary Rodham Clinton 39.3%
    Chris Dodd 0.5%
    John Edwards 8.8%
    Mike Gravel 0.5%
    Dennis Kucinich 6.6%
    Barack Obama 40.8%
    Bill Richardson 0.7%

    Republicans

    Rudolph Giuliani 34.7%
    Mike Huckabee 7.6%
    Duncan Hunter 0.8%
    Alan Keyes 1.7%

    Ron Paul 12.7%
    Mitt Romney 18.6%
    Tom Tancredo 0.8%
    Fred Thompson 6.8%

78.1 percent of students voted for a Democrat in the primary; 21.9 percent voted Republican.

Voter registration also took place at the two polling places on campus, which were located in the Student Union and Alger Hall.

“The turnout and enthusiasm of our students is most encouraging for the upcoming 2008 presidential election. In addition, many of our students were able to register to vote at the RIC primary and get a jumpstart on the electoral process,” said Jane Fusco, RIC spokesperson.
