Ron Paul: kind of a big deal

Every now and again, Ron Paul deserves more than just one Quote of the Day. Last Friday, bow-tied monstrosity Tucker Carlson wrote a piece for The New Republic: “Pimp My Ride: On the road with Ron Paul’s merry band of misfits and his hooker fan club.” Carlson ‘reports‘:
Being at the center of attention clearly bothers Paul. “I like to be unnoticed,” he says, a claim not typically made by presidential candidates. “That’s my personality. I see all the excitement and sometimes I say to myself, ‘Why do they do that?’ I don’t see myself as a big deal.”
WHHHATTT?? When your followers, dubbed “Paultards” by the blog-demons of Wonkette, are minting their own coins with your likeness, you’re kind of a big deal. Here is Paul’s new campaign ad: Ron Paul–Defender of Freedom. More importantly, though, is this video of Ron Paul defeating Adolf Hitler in combat.

For a more serious take on the Ron Paul Revolution, however, check out Earl Ofari Hutchinson’s sobering piece on the significance of Paul’s dismissal of the Civil War and Abe Lincoln.

I don’t get it, Ariel.
I’m not a Paul supporter, but the Civil War was the most brutal conflict resulting in the greatest loss of life this country has ever seen. What’s so bad about saying that slavery could have been done away with without shedding blood or suffering the long-standing divisions that resulted from the war?
Paul’s supporters may be over-zealous, and you may disagree with his belief in smaller government and free market economics, but really, don’t you think there’s a better argument to be made than the against his consistent anti-war stance?

I’m not arguing with his anti-war stance, JOHN. To tell you the truth, I find the entire Ron Paul Revolution to be a source of comedic relief amidst what has become a very trying primary season. I think that there is much to be said for Earl Ofari’s take on the issue (there is almost always something to be said for Earl Ofari’s take on any issue), but I can certainly see the merit in the argument that the Civil War might have been avoided with an economic, rather than bloody, settlement. My gripe with Ron Paul has to do with his call for the discontinuation of nearly all social services. I don’t really feel that he sufficiently backs his demand for the elimination of entitlements with any real plan for justice. But my Ron Paul Quote of the Day feature aims to please, not irritate! Whom do you support?

Yes, those are my words. I direct readers to real criticism of Ron Paul via Earl Ofari Hutchinson, since I am more inclined to bask in the greatness of Paul’s absurdity. Wonkette stooge?
