What’s shaking in hippo town?
3:32 am on December 29th, 2007 by Ari SavitzkyAs we ponder the carnage and tragedy that can come from encounters between humans and our erstwhile predators, let’s not forget those animal friends who, while enormous, are cuddly and playful. Take this cable-TV star hippo here:
If only this would happen with a manatee in Rhode Island. This domesticated hippo’s South African “proprietors” (I know its free to go at any time but whatever) are charging $35 a year to become a member of jessicahippo.com. Actually maybe that’s not so much given what it must cost to feed and caffeinate Jessica on the daily. And ooh there are pictures!
Questions:
a) Are hippos really this domesticatable?
b) Why does
PETA love this for some reason?
WARNING: Hippos are extremely dangerous. Never approach a hippo as it will kill you.

Hey Ari! That’s Jessica, the 1,000 lb domesticated hippo living as a family pet in the wilds of South Africa. She was orphaned at birth and apparently would have become a croc’s dinner if she hadn’t been rescued by the man in the picture. Says he prefers animals to people because animals are not innately cruel and don’t kill for pleasure. Reminds me of those who keep Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs as house pets — but a whole lot bigger.
