fredshalo It’s the dead signing for the dead here people!

CRANSTON — City officials say they have discovered the forged signature of a man who died nearly a year ago on the nomination papers of Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson.
The three-member Board of Canvassers voted unanimously yesterday afternoon to turn the matter over to the state police for investigation.
Forging a signature on nomination papers is a felony in Rhode Island.

My excuses for why I didn’t get the 150 signatures necessary to qualify as a candidate for delegate after the jump.

Yes, that’s right. The deadline for delegate signatures was today, and I don’t have 150, basically because I was busy, lazy and stupid. But, talking to voters about the political process, even the convoluted delegate selection process, is still fun! Especially when they’re not dead Fred Thompson supporters from Cranston.

First, the excuses for why I couldn’t get the 150 signatures:
1. Such was my commitment that I went to NH to volunteer, and couldn’t get my nomination papers until the last possible day.
2. I kindof thought that the deadline was a week from today, not today. Whoopsie.
3. I have a job, and didn’t enlist any help in getting the sigs, further reducing potential person-hours.
4. I ran for delegate (losing badly, duh) in 2004. Subconsciously, I wanted to give others a chance to shine.
5. I lost my cellphone for like a day before I found it again. That totally screwed up my planz.
6. My dog ate like 110 of them.

And some reflections:
1. Signature gathering, especially if it’s just you and you don’t have a lot of time, should really be done with the voter list.
2. Some people are so nice! A lot of Obama supporters are out there in RI, as are a lot of undecideds, Hillary supporters, Republicans, Indies, Kucinich loverz, etc who are genuinely interested in talking about the presidential election and about politics and democracy in America.
3. Gathering for the nomination process also takes a little ’splaining. But the delegate selection process is ridiculous. Good thing I love talking about proportional representation.
4. People are mean.
5. Seriously, dead people from Cranston love Fred Thompson:
