Now, for those of you who don’t know, 2008 is the Year of the Dance. I decided against traditional resolutions and I just named the year like the Chinese do. Kinda. So, please, keep that in mind when you read the rest of this column. I am no wallflower and few people can keep up with my dancing shoes.
Apparently, most people are idiots. I went to Chicago this weekend and I witnessed the most horrifying thing. It is called “The Cha-Cha Slide.”

First thing I should say is some line-dances can be cool. Like “The Tush Push.” Honestly. This dance is impressive, especially when a whole crowd of people are doing it.
The same cannot be said of the Cha-Cha Slide. There is no dancing in this excuse for space. Commands range from “Take it to the left” and “Hop once this time” and seriously dissapoint. But the crazy part was the enthusiasm these 20-somethings put into this disaster they called a dance. Boys and girls alike were rushing to the dance floor, pushing those of us who knew better out of the way.
My cousins and I stood at the edge of the dance floor, mouths agape, unable to come to terms with what was happening.
“This is how the Holocaust happened,” Louis said. “People will do anything you ask them to do.”
I couldn’t agree more. I almost heard it in the lyrics to that God-forsaken song. “Now take it to the left…. Now find a Jew…. And slap that Jew….”
I beg of you Rhode Island: ban the Cha-Cha Slide. No good can come of it.

The terrible cha-cha slide into fascism. One day we will look around the streets and wonder: where are our freedoms, and for christ’s sakes, Who Let the Dogs Out?

Seriously- My little cousins were busting this way back in ‘02, and the last time I heard it was from a children’s dj. If this is the sign we are sliding into facism, it’s a heck of a gradual slope.
