Today is St. Joseph’s Day, the most exciting day of the year for Italian-American pastry lovers besides maybe Christmas!
St Joseph was the husband of Mary and, um, the guy that was hanging around when Jesus was born. He’s the patron saint of Sicilians and workers, and there’s a feast on March 19th in the Catholic Church to honor him. Some places (though not Rhode Island, oddly) have parades on St Joseph’s Day, and bakeries do their best to provide happy Italian-Americans with zeppole, those cream-filled pastry things that are either baked or fried and which are way better at the LaSalle and DeLuise bakeries than at DeFusco’s in Cranston, as I discovered this morning.
This is a crazy time for all the Italian bakeries, though–it’s the only time that St Joseph’s Day and Easter are going to fall in the same week until 2035.
