Thayer Street Institution Quietly Closes Its Doors

So, one of my co-workers just asked me if I knew when the Geoff’s on Thayer had closed. And, truth be told, I hadn’t actually noticed, despite spending eight hours of every day directly across the street from it. I actually only went in it two or three times since it moved off the corner into its new (or, I guess, old) location. They had taken my favorite sandwich (the Starvin’ Marvin) off the menu and then yelled at me when I asked if I could have one anyway.
Anyhoo, it turns out, nobody else I work with had noticed that the place closed either. Anybody out there know? Is the Benefit Street location still open? How about Cafe Zog?
(PS–This picture, which was ganked from the Geoff’s website, creeps the heck out of me. But more so on the website, because the eyes are blinking on that one.)

Zog is still open. I’m pretty sure Geoff’s on Benefit is as well, but it’s been a couple of months since I’ve been there. That sandwich always reminds me of the sun carving from the original version of The Wicker Man.

Damn… I remember when I first moved to Providence, I lived on Thayer Street (no, really - my apartment was down the alley behind the Army/Navy store), and I ate at Geoff’s more than I probably should have. It got to the point where the guys behind the counter would give me free loaves of bread if I was there when they were closing.
I haven’t been there in years, though (probably to make up for all the Jen & Berry’s I ate)… I had no idea that they’d closed down either… and here I was dreaming of introducing my kid to their special brand of horrible customer service and really good pickles.

I think they had trouble find insulting and truculent staff who could keep the place dirty enough.

You folks have NO clue as to what insulting and truculent(love it) staff unless you’ve ever gone to Katz’s deli in NYC,just off the Bowery.Middle-aged Jewish waiters who literally fling the food at the customers and make Don Rickles look like Mother Teresa.
