Once upon a time I was a little boy in Le Roy, NY, where my parents still live. It’s a beautiful little town on a small winding creek nestled in the rolling farmland that surrounds it. Le Roy is also the birthplace of Jell-O, and I’m not kidding when I say that every year we have a summer celebration known locally as Jell-O Days although its official name is the Oatka Fest, the Indian name for our little creek. When I was in grade school we put on a play about the origins of Jell-O, each student standing and reciting an essential date in the history of the famous dessert. Bill Cosby came to Le Roy to celebrate its 100 year anniversary. There is a Jell-O museum in town. So this morning, when I received an email from my dad, and it wasn’t the usual right-wing propaganda/misogynistic chain-jokes but rather a link to a New York Times article on my hometown and Jell-O, it was a nice little Sunday treat. So I’m sharing it with you.
