…a few days ago when I mentioned Jane Goodall’s refusal to come to Brown. For (new) videos of monkeys moving stuff with their thoughts, via the NYTimes, click here.
Two monkeys with tiny sensors in their brains have learned to control a mechanical arm with just their thoughts, using it to reach for and grab food and even to adjust for the size and stickiness of morsels when necessary, scientists reported on Wednesday.
Also, if you wanna set the monkeys free, email me, here.

Ethics aside, its funny how slow technology news takes to hit a paper like the Times. This research was showing rapid signs of success many many years ago and videos of this type have been available about as long. It seems there is some gap between peoples perception of how technologically advanced we are and the truth of the matter. It seems we are already capable of many many things most people would write off as science fiction.

I’m only against this because this is the type of science experimenting that can lead to MODOK happening in real life.

Yeah, I’ve seen these stories before. Never knew they did it at Brown, though. I forget the comedian who said it, but:
“I love monkeys as much as the next guy, and don’t want to see one suffer. But if hooking a chimp up to a car battery means a cure for AIDS, I’m all for it.”

maybe that’s why the last ‘brown in the media’ newsletter was blank.

Kind of reminds me of Star Wars when Luke Skywalker lost his hand to Darth Vader. This is amazing technology. I’m just thinking of all the injured soldiers coming from Iraq and Afghanistan or others who have lost limbs. Technology like this will greatly improve their quality of life. I think this is a perfect example of where the positive aspects greatly outweigh the negative.
