New Girl Law

9:53AM ON 05/30/2008
BY Matthew Lawrence

The Chbap Srei, or Girl Law, is a wicked old book written in verse intended to tell ladies about all the things they should and shouldn’t be doing, like taking care of the parenting (encouraged) and allowing the fabric of your clothing to make noise when you walk (a no-no).

New Girl Law is something else entirely. Conceived by Anne Elizabeth Moore, a very smart and nice lady beloved by comics fans, punks, and sexy vegetarians* alike, New Girl Law is a letterpress book that she made in conjunction with thirty-two feminists in Cambodia over the winter. It basically re-establishes the rules for how ladies should behave, and has the added bonus of not being thousands of stanzas long.

Tonight at six, if you can tear yourself away from the nicest day of the nicest spring we’ve had in years and years, Moore will be speaking at AS220. She’ll be talking about New Girl Law, about the audio version of the book she made with students from AS220’s Broad Street Studio, and possibly about other things as well. Moore says it will be funny, and possibly also sad, frustrating, mindblowing, and/or lame, although I kind of doubt that last one.

To get you in the mood for the talk, here’s one of my favorite Cambodian ladies, Tiny Yong, as she and a totally adorable puppy ride up and down the Eiffel Tower.

(*OK, here’s what I was actually referring to.  And this, peripherally.)
