You either love it or hate it, but you can’t forget it once you’ve had it. No, I’m not talking about…well, lots of things. I’m talking about root beer. NY Times wine guy Eric Asimov and his panel taste a bunch of root beers and conclude, among other things, that “too much root beer can make a man mean”.
Our No. 1 root beer, from Sprecher in Wisconsin, a wonderfully balanced and complex brew, uses a combination of corn syrup and honey, while our No. 2, the restrained and flavorful IBC, uses only corn syrup. So even with the importance of the sweetener, something more is at play with root beers.
I’ve always wanted to have a root beer tasting.

Jim Rizzo Says:
If you haven’t already, try Harpoon’s Root Beer. You can get it at Shaws.
And if you’re ever in northwestern NH, look for the Woodstock Inn & Brewery’s Root Beer. They sell it in jugs and it’s awesome. You don’t have to get it at the brewery, it’s available in some of the stores around there as well.

People are not illegal Says:
Yumm… Sprecher. They also make excellent beers, but, this being Rhode Island, you can’t get them here.

jwest Says:
So what are you, then, if you aren’t a xenophobe? A bigot? A racist? Personally, I’m fine with ‘jerk’.

JOE BERNSTEIN Says:
I’m none of the above, but really, just who the fuck are you that I should justify myself to?

Eric Smith Says:
Easy guys, we’re all jerks here, okay? Calling someone a racist is serious shit, and not to be taken lightly. Mr. Bernstein, whose comments can be at times contentious and very funny, has never shown any indication of being racist or homophobic, and although his personal politics are probably on the conservative side, I don’t think xenophobia is one of his ‘things’ either. He has strong opinions and we won’t be censoring them in any way (we’ve never felt the need to anyway)
So, jwest, ease up there a bit, okay?

JOE BERNSTEIN Says:
Thanks Eric, for being fairminded.I do admit I can be a major jerk at times myself. As far as being racist, homophobic,or xenophobic, they’re retarded attitudes, which I don’t subscribe to.Actually, being white in my family makes me a minority.
I do try to find humor in many situations. There are some which are devoid of it,such as when children are hurt or victimized.
One of the reasons I like this blog is that you never know what to expect-it’s not all politics all the time.
I like to post on anchorrising, kmareka, and here.I guess I’m eclectic.
Okay-here goes-David Segal finally put through a good bill-the probation reform.Long overdue.
