More Depressing And Insane Gun Violence On Smith Hill And The West End

10:55AM ON 07/02/2008
BY Eric Smith

An assortment of passages from the Projo today:

“Jeffrey Lopez, 19, was gunned down Monday night on the front porch of an apartment house less than two blocks from where the confrontation took place on a Camden Avenue sidewalk. A second shot grazed the back of Lopez’s friend, Carlos Javier, also 19″

‘A few minutes later, the police arrested two 16-year-old boys and the 13-year-old sister of one of the boys. The boys are charged with murder, while the girl is charged with retrieving the gun and threatening the teenage boys outside the gang hangout…”

“Since Jan. 1, there have been 33 gunshot victims in the city, up from 18 during last year’s first six months.”

“And, two weeks ago, four members of Laos Pride, two of whom are juveniles, were arrested in the city’s West End on weapons charges right after they allegedly opened fire on a rival gang — the Hanover Boyz. No one was wounded in that attack”

  1. Did Cicilline recently say something about the crime in the city being down significantly? He lies with a straight facewhen he’s done as a politician(hopefully soon)he has a great career ahead selling time shares.
This shooting was totally senseless-but the same crazy shit happened when I was growing up in Brooklyn-people don’t change.

  2. Does anyone else see the connection between David Segal’s blog “Governor thinks innocent should stay in the can” and this one? Interesting how this is happening in the state houses back yard and the legislatures are still weakening their grip on crime..

  3. Victoria, I don’t see the connection. The two articles address two unrelated issues.

  4. I see the connection between cutting all sorts of services and assistance to the state’s poorest populations and an increase in crime. I don’t know how I would react if I was growing up with few options and then the few options I had were cut again and again and again. Want to get a job, but can’t get a good education. Want to get to the job but can’t afford gas. Want to get a job but can’t afford childcare AND working. No more health care, no more heating assistance and guess what, I still need to make it on just $7.49 an hour. The legislators who made these cuts are the criminals.

    So sad.

  5. Nicole-I hear what you say,but then I see some of the people locked up for these crimes, and they have lots of nice gold jewelry, tricked out cellphiones that cost megabucks, expensive clothing-and very often high end cars to drive around in.I’m not discounting the fact that alot of people in RI are poor and lacking basic needs, but I’m talking here about the criminal element-they always seem to be doing pretty well.
Lack of good affordable public transportation is a major problem and isn’t being addressed.
My kids went to Providence public schools-one became highly educated, the other not.You get out of the education system what you put into it.
I am an NRA member and have been armed since I was 18(I’m 62),but I have a real problem with minors getting access to handguns(except on a range)-I wonder how these kids came by that firearm.Did an adult in the home leave it around? That is a problem.I doubt any one of the perpetrators in the 35 shootings in Providence this year(up 100% since last year Mr.Mayor)bothered to fill out the paperwork or wait 7 days to pick up their firearms from legitimate dealers.Yet that is where the “progressive”legislators concentrate their efforts-dumb,no?
