The Company McCain Keeps

Seems that a top fundraiser for McCain last year plead guilty to a little terrorist funding.

From the HuffPo: “Carl H. Lindner Jr., the billionaire Cincinnati businessman, was CEO of Chiquita Brands International from 1984 to 2001, and remained on the company’s board of directors until May 2002. Beginning under his tenure, Chiquita executives paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (known by the Spanish acronym AUC), which is described by George Washington University’s National Security Archive as an “illegal right-wing anti-guerrilla group tied to many of the country’s most notorious civilian massacres.”

“Late last week, Lindner co-hosted a $25,000-per-person fundraiser for McCain and the Republican Party in the wealthy Indian Hills neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. The event raised about $2 million; Lindner also serves on McCain’s Ohio Victory Team”

  1. So Senator McCain has a Jeremiah Wright among his mist are we to admittedly write him off as a qualified presidential candidate? This is an interesting New York Times article that I read a while back that might change your tune about Senator McCain.

Senator McCain is hardly the war fanatic that he is often made out to be. At least he has substance unlike other candidates. Senator Obama’s foreign policy is strongly based on soft power (which marches to a similar beat of this article) but the foremost expert on soft power, Joseph Nye, has questioned Senator Obama’s legitimacy.

  3. A very interesting take Victoria-I recall when Reagan took office some people expected nuclear Armageddon-it didn’t happen of course, and Reagan didn’t involve us in any extended military operations. The soviets were afraid of him to the extent that they decided to be reasonable.
The extremists in today’s world probably view McCain as a man who can make a decision that might mean the obliteration of said extremists.I don’t think they believe Obama has the backbone for the confrontation and consequently they might push harder and then ignite a major conflagration by shoving Obama’s back to the wall, thus making him react without considering everything. With McCain they might possibly limit themselves.
    Just thinking out loud here.
