What Am I Listening To?

10:09AM ON 07/10/2008
BY Matthew Lawrence

benefits-of-headphones People of Providence, my itunes folder needs your help!

I’ve got a bunch of songs with no tags on them.  No titles, no artists, nothing.  And none of them are ringing any bells with me.

I’m so annoyed I even made a muxtape about it.  Anybody have any idea about what any of these dozen might be?  I’ll be eternally grateful if you’ve got any answers.

  1. Eric Smith

    I’ll take a shot:

Track 1. What the fuck? Whatever it is it’s horrible and awesome, and French.

    2. Where the hell did you get this? Is it Portuguese?

    3. Stereolab? Broadcast? J.R. would know.

    4. This is awful. It’s like a French Pet Shop Boys. Which should by all rights be awesome but this isn’t. Like the chorus though.

    5. This really cool, but I can’t place the voice. J.R., we need you on this one too… Song is obviously called “Trick Of The Light”.

    6. Like this a lot, again the voice is so familiar but I can’t place it. I know I’ve heard this before.

    7. No idea. “Riff Raff Disco!”

    8. Whatever it is it’s from 1987 or 1992. On Sarah Records? Holy shit this is good. It’s not the Vaselines but it could be. Kevin Leavitt would masturbate to this.

    9. This could be on that Hercules and Love Affair record, but it’s not. Trust me.

    10. That fact that “_final_” is in the file name suggests that it’s a final mixdown of some musician’s home recordings. it’s pretty cool too…

    11. The Kingdom, “I Am Constellation” Yes!!

  2. “Unknown - Track 11″ is in Dutch - I was able to search it by transcribing a few lyrics: “Chachacha” by Raymond van het Groenewoud, a Belgian guy with a bizarre website splashscreen:

  4. The third one (”Track 11″) is “Cha, Cha, Cha” by Raymond van het Groenewoud, which, thanks for reminding me how much I love that song.

The fourth one (”Track 13″) is “La De Da” by Milky, from the second Songs for the Jetset comp.

The seventh one (”Track 15″) is the awesome awesome “Sweet Talkin’ Candy Man” by The Carrie Nations, from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

The eighth one (”Track 16″) is the best song ever made, “Disco Rough” by Mathematiques Modernes.

And yeah, the last one is The Kingdom.

Other than that, I can’t help you.

  5. Wow, I had totally forgotten about my brief musical love affair with Raymond van het Groenewoud.

  6. Damn you Eric Smith! Don’t drag me into this, I’m trying to balance my checkbook and now, an hour later, it’s still out of whack and I’m listening to a bunch of stuff I should already own. I hate you! Actually, it’s Mathew I hate, since he brought it up. I just want to work in peace….
