Ambrose Burnside wasn’t a very good general. Sure, he seemed like a nice guy, but he wasn’t so good at the whole commanding of armies thing. In fact, his Wikipedia entry describes him as “obstinate, unimaginative, and unsuited both intellectually and emotionally for high command.”
Plus he was the first-ever president of the NRA. Yikes!!
Nevertheless, he does have one enduring legacy, and an important one at that. Which is why you need to put down that razor you’re holding. Because Saturday, in Burnside Park, there’s going to be a competition to see who’s got the best facial hair in town. I’m one of the judges, and I’ll be get mad and start yelling if somebody doesn’t show up with an Ibsen.
Actually, not really. I’m not mean, much as I might try, and I realize not everyone here can have the sideburns of old-timey Scandinavians.
(PS–When you’re downtown, you might also want to check out the IndieArts yard sale, where I’ll be selling books for Not About The Buildings and lots of other people will be selling lots of other stuff for lots of other reasons. It starts at 1 and goes until 11. There’s all kinds of other stuff happening, too, but we can announce it through the week so you don’t get overwhelmed all at once. )

Oooh he was the first president of the NRA-how awful.The NRA isn’t the KKK Matt.The founder of the NRA was General George W.Wingate-the high school(now history)that I attended in Brooklyn was named after him.And irony of ironies-Barbara Boxer,the gun hater herself,was a 1960 graduate.I don’t know her maiden name,but her future sister in law was in my class.I’m an NRA member-but I guess that’s no surprise.
