Rhode Island’s Economy: Shitty, Getting Shittier.

Austin’s looking pretty good right about now. Or Portland, Oregon, San Diego or even Seattle. Rhode Island’s economy is in the toilet. Electricity just went up over 20%, meaning you’ll be paying about $30 more a month for it. Also, heating oil is up 79% which means poor people are going to freeze this winter, if they don’t starve first. Everyone knows how much gas is right now, I won’t even start on that. And have you noticed how many of your friends are unemployed? That’s because the unemployment rate here has gone up to 7.2%, but don’t worry, that’s only the second highest rate in the U.S. right now. The labor force shrank in May, meaning people are leaving the state. I woke up at 6 am and couldn’t get back to sleep so I thought, “I’ll just watch the news and relax.” That was a bad idea.

Maybe Rhode Island just needs to be more creative. Our neighbor to the north just repealed the “1913 law” for what sounds like mainly economical reasons (income from out-of-state marriage licenses). We should totally cash in on that. Maybe open a few Del’s stands in front of the Massachusetts State House?

It’s not the “bad economy” causing issues, R.I. has NO economy. R.I.’s economy has sucked forever. 25 years ago it was based on junk jewelry & state workers unions.
You lost the jewelry biz to Mexico, now you just have the state workers.
R.I. has no culture of modern entrepreneurship to get things going. You’re screwed for the foreseeable future
If you are going to stick around, not sure what to tell you.
