Last night’s raid

7:00AM ON 07/16/2008
BY Dave Segal

UPDATE: I’d forgotten to mention this moment, which Pat recalls at RIFuture:

Tensions were very high on the picket line tonight, especially after one officer was spotted moving a long gun, either a shot gun or rifle, from the trunk of his squad car to the truck of another car.

RIFuture has had solid coverage throughout.

Basically, there were coordinated raids, facilitated by the RI Judiciary, at all six courthouses. They went down _during_ the first meeting of the governor’s immigration advisory panel. (A not-so-subtle “Screw you!”) Dozens of janitors who work for Tri-State Enterprises were arrested, mostly women, many with small children.

They were detained for several hours at the ICE headquarters on Dyer Street, as a couple hundred people gathered to protest the raids. Here’s some footage of what went down when the vans holding the detainees left the complex:[youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nhYWaaOaFg&eurl=http://www.rifuture.org/]

Especially cute — there were Dominican and Guatemalan flags hanging in the docking area, from which the prisoners were loaded in and out of the vans.

  1. This is a really shocking story.

It seems like the msm has little interest in activism or protest of immigration crack downs like these, but this story should be prominently featured, instead of the meaningless drivel that makes it onto the ri local news every night.

And honestly, you gotta hand it to the protesters, it’s not easy standing up to the police like that. I mean, it’s truly putting oneself in harms way.

Update #2: Community advocates will be holding a 300pm emergency press conference today in front of the Garrahy Courthouse (RI District & Family Court on Dorrance St.) to address the ICE raid.

  4. If Rachel Miller and her crew are looking for public support after the Marco Riz situation,I’d say they are living in a fantasy world.Illegal workers are exploited by these companies-there are many US citizens on public assistance who could take these jobs and they couldn’t be intimidated by their status.Janitorial work doesn’t require a GED or anything except a willingness to work.I thought Jobs With Justice opposed exploitation-can’t have it both ways. The only explanation is that JWJ is for open borders. They ought to be honest and just say so.
