New ad for MSNBC’s Lockup

2:39 pm on July 18th, 2008 by Dave Segal

There are about a million ways in which MSNBC is actually worse than FoxNews, especially in light of their veneer of greater respectability. Just caught the new ad for Lockup out of the corner of my eye:

“1 out of every 100 Americans is in prison…”

“How will YOU do the time?”

I’ve been saying for a while now that I’d rather get my news from FOX than even NPR, because at least FOX doesn’t pretend.

I don’t get the fascination MSNBC has with people serving time. They almost make a reality show out of it.A lot of acting out by inmates is probably potentiated by the presence of cameras.Anything to break the routine.
You notice they don’t get into Federal joints to wander around.Prisons aren’t entertaining-they are the bottom of the world and shows like Lockup have an insidious way of glamorizing them.Just tell me if you think I’m crazy for saying that.
I must admit I liked the one on Stateville Penetentiary because we were always in there to process aliens serving time. The big street gangs in Chicago used to get their members to take CO jobs there to facilitate contrband smuggling. In the seventies it was easier to get hired as an Illinois CO than to work at Dunkin Donuts. The Sun-Times did an undercover expose of the situation. One morning the State Police cam in and locked down the prison and searched the CO’s coming in on the day shift. They seized a LOt of contraband and arrested a number of CO’s on outstanding warrants including one for murder in Pennsylvania.Nice.
