Veggie Vigilante: This Heart’s on Fire.
My last dinner out was an authentic family affair, right down to the uncle with slightly odd dining requests. We went to Blaze, 776 Hope St., Providence, a fantastic vegetarian friendly fusion restaurant. The folks at Blaze have many vegetarian items on the menu, are willing to tinker with dishes to make them vegetarian, and met every one of my uncle’s unusual requests without even raising an eyebrow. Blaze is definitely iffy for vegans, which is a downer, but I have confidence they can work on that (by maybe adding a vegan spicy black bean burger, hint hint, *wink* *wink*). Overall, the wait staff is friendly, always available, open to inquiry about their dishes, and willing to work with more picky eaters.
The Veggie Vigilante recommends Blaze on Hope for, among other things, its “kicked up” grilled pizzas, sumptuous sweet potato fries, and laudable desserts. Sadly, the Thayer Street location recently closed, so College Hill peeps will have to trek down to Hope Street to get their spice on.
Vegetarian options include:
- The best sweet potato fries you’ve ever had. That’s how they advertise them and they’re not lying! Be sure to get the basket, not the side portion. In the unlikely case that you don’t finish, wrap them up and bring them home. They’re probably the only fries I’ve had with excellent microwave reheat value. They’ll even wrap the trio of dipping sauces served on the side!
- Many grilled pizzas. Spanakopita, margarita, veggie, cheeseless (if you ask), all with the option of getting “kicked up” with jalapeño peppers and a spice-rubbed crust. Take the option, but they’re still delicious without the added heat.
- Grilled veggie plate. For someone who stays away from veggie plates in general (VV needs more carbs than that!), Blaze serves one that I actually order from time to time, as it’s pretty substantial with the addition of a brown rice cake.
- Linguine pink vodka. Normally, I don’t like to do this, but for this delicious dish, I did: ask for it without chicken (and without mushrooms in my case). My recommendation for the restaurant obviously is to make it a dish sans chicken, and, for an added cost, give the option to add some poultry. Anyway, you can pick from mild, medium, or hot. The sauce is delicious with a Cajun spice to it, and portions are huge.
- Desserts: They make all of their own cakes and they could open a separate bakery with those kinds of skills. Try the chocolate mousse banana split cake or the coconut layer cake. Ask for scoop of their homemade ice cream on top.

I agree, a spicy black bean burger would be the perfect addition to the menu — thanks for looking out for us vegans too!

I’m really distraught about the one on Thayer closing. They had the only decent salad on the whole street.
