“Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization”

1:45PM ON 08/06/2008
BY Ariel Werner

adbusters_79WARNING: This (scathing and astute) Adbusters piece on Hipster culture will likely be offensive and/or depression-inducing to the majority of our readership. Do not read while intoxicated, on a high ledge, or wearing flannel.

An artificial appropriation of different styles from different eras, the hipster represents the end of Western civilization – a culture lost in the superficiality of its past and unable to create any new meaning. Not only is it unsustainable, it is suicidal. While previous youth movements have challenged the dysfunction and decadence of their elders, today we have the “hipster” – a youth subculture that mirrors the doomed shallowness of mainstream society.

I think there is something to what this guy has to say. I think this really applies to what a lot of medium-sized bands experience… “But the moment a trend, band, sound, style or feeling gains too much exposure, it is suddenly looked upon with disdain. Hipsters cannot afford to maintain any cultural loyalties or affiliations for fear they will lose relevance.”
No one seems to be able to stick with what a band is doing past their first cd. It seems like its uncool to look forward to what they might do next….have to find something new all the time.

  3. Am I the only one that can’t finish a single article in Adbusters ever?

  4. Thanks for the laughs. That was quite the expose of the skinny jean fixed gear apocalypse we all fear… get your bunkers ready kids!
