In My Shoes?

Word that Scott Mackay is leaving the Providence Journal has brought a dark cloud over my sunny day. (Though reading his kick-ass statement made me feel a little better…)
Newspapers are going down the tubes. Downsizing is necessary, they say, as there’s just not a profit in this biz anymore. And what is the Belo Corp. doing to make the ProJo better?
I can’t roll my eyes far enough into my head at the Providence Journal’s new “In Her Shoes” initiative to attract a female audience. What sorts of things will be featured? What makes “women’s news” any different from the news I seek every day?
I’m looking for thoughtful, well-researched stories about issues that, in truth, effect men and women alike. I’m looking to get the news from experienced journalists. And I’m looking for an editorial board that occasionally represents the views of most Rhode Islanders, or at the very least provides intriguing opinion pieces, based on reason and fact, that challenge my beliefs.
I get the feeling that the best I can hope for from BeloJo’s “In Her Shoes” is a few online articles on eyebrow waxing vs. eyebrow threading and a pink background with hearts and kisses.
In the meantime, I know all of our Daily Dose readers appreciate the irreverence and occasional ridiculousness of the blog. We are grateful for the opportunity to provide you with funny commentary on news and maybe some info on community events. But let’s really think about the downsizing of the Providence Journal and how it’s going to affect our state. Blogs can’t, and shouldn’t, fill the gap that will be left by the downsizing of the newspaper.
Scott, from a female ProJo reader, you’ll be sorely missed.
