Via Ian, via the BDH. Miko’s is kaput:
A locked door, a dark, almost bare interior and a large sign reading “Space for Lease” in red letters. Today, that’s all that greets visitors and customers to what was once Wickenden Street’s popular sex store, Miko Exoticwear.
The shop closed this July after a “mismanagement” of funds by the store’s manager - who had quit shortly before then - made it impossible for the business to remain open, owner Jeff Gellman told The Herald.

There’s a sign in the window that says something about a new “erotic boutique” opening named Mister Sister.

I’ll miss Miko, but to be honest, I started mourning its loss when they moved -to- Wickenden Street.
I know it had a location before the one next to the Arcade, but that’s when I started going there, back in 1997 or so. They seemed to serve mostly the strippers of the area, mostly focusing on stage clothes and lingerie. I used to go there with various female friend classmates of mine after school or during lunch. It was the only place I knew of to get premium lube and decent high-quality toys, and it was fun to dress up my friends in stripper outfits during the school day.
Then they moved to North Main St. and seemed to focus on the ‘east-sider who needs a vibrator’ market, with a lot less clothing and a lot more books, toys, and light BDSM stuff. I still liked it, but it just didn’t quite have that ‘downtown’ flavor. The staff was super-nice and helpful though, I’d have to say that they definitely had the most helpful staff early-on at the Main St. location.
I knew the Wickenden location wouldn’t last long. It seemed like they totally shifted away from their core market and decided to sell to the college girls; a much smaller collection of gimmicky toys, bachelorette party favors, and a much less professional-looking storefront took over. Maybe the staff was just as helpful, but I feel like they spent most of their time trying to herd the crowds of ‘just here to giggle at stuff’ college girls.
Another Providence institution gone… We’ll miss you Miko!
