‘Stronger Than Their Walls’ screening tonight (THURS)
Stronger Than Their Walls is a new documentary about the effort to amend RI’s terrible probation system, which is such that you can be sent back to prison just for being accused of a crime, without trial. I’ve been the sponsor of the legislation (along with Sen Rhoda Perry). The bill passed overwhelmingly last year, but was vetoed by the Governor… and we’re still holding out hope that it’ll be overridden — or at least passed again early in the new session.
Here’s the trailer:
A documentary about struggles for justice in Rhode Island.
RI state law allows people on probation to be incarcerated for crimes for which they have been found innocent or for which the charges have been dismissed. This documentary follows the story of several men who were presumed guilty and never given a fair chance to demonstrate their innocence. The families of these imprisoned men take the issue to the Rhode Island Statehouse, where they tell their stories in an effort to reform the law.
Stronger Than Their Walls is currently organizing screenings around Rhode Island. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a screening–at your house, your church, your community center, anywhere.
You can see it tomorrow, Thursday, evening at 7pm. Discussion afterwards. Details here.
