I don’t really like Chinese food, but I’m endlessly amazed at the deliciousness of the Pepper & Salt Tofu at Lucky Garden on Smith Street (in North Providence, near the Salvation Army.) It’s soooooooooooooooooo good.
Also good is everything else about Lucky Garden. Despite being in a North Providence strip mall, the food there is super-fresh, they’re always featuring some kind of vegetables that you’ve never heard of (which they’re more than happy to bring out to the table before you order it) and the servers are all the nicest people ever. And there’s a ridiculous number of choices, since they have an American menu, a Chinese menu, a specials menu, a specials board, and a list of specials that’s not written down anywhere. I’m a vegetarian, so I can’t speak for the meaty stuff, although the people I was with tonight totally dug the shrimp and crabs and chicken and pork and eel. And really, you have toads in your head if you don’t want the Pepper & Salt Tofu. It’s homemade, and full of vegetables. Also you get a mountain of it, and it tastes even better the next day.
I mention all this because Monday they’re closing for a month, so the owners can go to a family wedding in Hong Kong. That means that today is your last chance to eat there before Memorial Day.

You just made my dinner plans, too. I’ve been meaning to give this place a shout-out myself (for a totally different tofu dish, though). Not only does Lucky Garden have separate Chinese and American menus, but it has authentic dim sum (you have to ask for yet another menu, which is essentially a photo album of crazy sh*t). My favorite time to eat here is Chinese New Year, where they make the best red bean cakes south of Chinatown. Yummers.
