Florida Senators Not Aware Of The Whole Separation Of Church And State Thing

3:27PM ON 04/29/2009
BY Matthew Lawrence

The Florida senate approved a bill last Friday allowing for religious license plates.  The one to the right there, presented by Orlando senator Gary Siplin, was one of two Christian plates approved by the Senate, despite the fact that no images of the plates were shown to the legislators before the vote.

Florida has a lot of plates like this; usually residents pay a fee for a specialty plate and the proceeds go to a non-profit.  (The bigger Florida universities also have plates for their alumni.)  Funds from one of the Jesus plates would go to the Toomey Foundation, which I guess supports the natural sciences but which also has a psalm on the front page of their website.  (Something about Christian groups supporting archaeology and paleontology seems a little bit creepy, though.)  Money from the other plate would go to Faith In Teaching, which purports to support faith-based education but which actually may not even be real, since their website is down and their official mailing address is the office of a workers’ comp lawyer.
