Attention musicians. We really like promoting good bands with local connections, but if you want publicity don’t make us work too hard! Sign your emails and identify yourselves with your whole name and give out your basic bio info right at the top — like who plays what instrument for instance — so we can write something coherent. For instance, Boston’s Sunshine Riot sent this along at my request, “I went to Mount Saint Charles and Mercymount, which is actually how Jonny, Nick and I originally met (Chris Parry from Baylock went there as well). And our guest keyboardist Rose Keogh is from South Kingstown, who I met when I was a student at URI.” Cool. Go Rams. But who is “I”? I looked here and here and I don’t know, and it’s too nice out to be sitting at a computer. What I do know is that there is some great category-defying music making and songwriting going on here. (Favorite cuts: “Surely Temple”, “Country Music”, and “I’m Not Tired”) My mystery scribe discussed early influences and what they’re listening to now.
. . . growing up we were all into the grunge scene. Soundgarden was my favorite band since I was 5, Nick and Jonny were really into Nirvana and anything on the Seattle label Sub Pop. . . and Brian always loved Alice in Chains and hair metal. . . . I just got over a They Might Be Giants and Mumford and Sons kick, and Jonny has been listening to John McCauley’s (Deer Tick) side project, Middle Brother, for about six months now. Nick had a Katy Perry obsession last year, and Brian was intent on getting me to like hair metal (he failed). . . I’d have to say my favorite band right now is Brown Bird.
(Brian, let’s talk.) Jonny added in a later email,
Today, in an era when some bands are bringing laptops on stage and slipping into children’s jeans, we’re four guys. . . who play earnest, American music. We drink PBR cus it gets you drunk, we ain’t hipsters and this ain’t dance music. Well, okay, maybe it’s dance music.
Should be a good show. With Tab the Band (see below) and Baylock in support.
$10, 8pm, maybe 9pm (fb), Saturday, June 18, Firehouse 13, 41 Central Street

I went to that show, beforehand I checked out sunshine riots website(I was there for Tab). I was actually really disappointed, their studio tracks are atleast listenable. Live it sounded like any given high school moms basement band. I wonder how many hours of studio time they paid for to be coherent.

Hey Stever,
Well, admittedly turnout for a narragansetts sponsorship and the kids of Aerosmith was pretty low. I believe you were one of maybe 6 or 7 people I didn’t know in the crowd during Tab? No beef on them, we played with them in a packed house at the Middle East up and, let me tell you, holy shit. So, when they left, it was our friends that was at the show, and I don’t know about the rest of the band, but I got esssfaced. We had a Narragansetts sponsorship after all.
Anyway, thanks for coming out, we’re looking to do another Tab show at the Middle East Downstairs in the future, hope to see you there.
