Sojourner House Masquerade Ball — Oct 26

3:43PM ON 10/17/2012
BY jim almo

Biltmore Hotel Tickets are now available for the Sojourner House Masquerade Ball. Guests can have fun while supporting the work of this worthy Providence advocacy and resource center for victims of domestic violence. Sojourner House first came together back in the 70’s when members of the Brown University community became concerned that there were no services for victims of domestic violence. Since then, over 50,000 individual have been served.

The importance of their work cannot be overstated. In Rhode Island alone, there were 22 domestic violence murders in 2010 and 2011. The Domestic Violence Resource Center estimates that three women and one man are murdered each day in the U.S. as a result of domestic assault. The Centers for Disease Control place the cost of domestic violence at nearly $6 billion yearly, and that is only the cost of direct medical care and lost wages; it does not include the indirect costs associated with the criminal justice system or the cost of services to children affected by this violence (CDC, 2003). More info here.

The Masquerade Ball will be a fun way to support this organization, show off your costuming skills, mingle with local dignitaries, and bid for some great auction items. Individual tickets range from $50 to $75, with discounts for purchasing two tickets or packages of 10 tickets. Hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, live music, silent auction — costumes and masks are encouraged but optional.

7pm, Friday, October 26, Grand Ballroom, The Providence Biltmore, 11 Dorrance Street
