Providence Filmmaker Makes News With Award/Screening

BY Beth Comery

Spirit Awards Exciting news for Providence filmmaker Laura Colella, writer, editor, and director of Breakfast with Curtis which was filmed entirely in Providence. The film has been nominated for the John Cassavetes Award for ‘Best Feature made under $500,000′ at the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards (airs February 23rd on IFC). At the nominees brunch Colella was awarded

. . . a $50,000 grant (the Jameson FIND Your Audience Award through Film Independent in Los Angeles) to help support distribution for her narrative feature film Breakfast with Curtis. The award was presented to her by actors Jeremy Renner and Salma Hayek at a nominees brunch for the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards last Saturday.

And every bit as exciting;

Unrelated to the grant and award nomination, Colella’s film will also be presented in a special screening by filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master, There Will Be Blood, Magnolia, Punchdrunk Love, Boogie Nights). The screening will take place on February 21st at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica and Anderson will introduce the film and conduct a Q&A with Colella following it.

We don’t normally run these grin-and-grip publicity shots but this one is a cut above the usual submission in that it includes not one local politician. Colella teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design, and is also currently an MFA candidate in Brown University’s Writing for Performance program.
