‘Bigger Splash’ At Cable Car
This sounds like a good one. If nothing else it should be fun to look at . . . lots of impossible scenery, terraces, pools, languid people wearing beautiful clothes . . . all the accoutrements of modern affluence. Manohla Dargis of the New York Times describes the director’s visual style: “Mr. Guadagnino excels at creating lifestyle pornography of an especially rarefied kind, although in classic European style, he gilds the pleasure with some political guilt.”
And apparently all you can do with the Tilda Swinton character is look as the actress arranged to appear in the film as long as she didn’t speak much. But who doesn’t enjoy looking at Tilda Swinton. Here she plays a rock star (a brief glimpse of this in the trailer would indicate that Swinton is ready for her Bowie biopic and why not). And apparently Ralph Fiennes is a hoot.
The setting for this sultry, kooked-out mystery is the Mediterranean island of Pantelleria which is closer to Tunisia than it is to Sicily.
The lives of a high profile couple, a famous rock star and a filmmaker, (Tilda Swinton and Matthias Schoenaerts) vacationing and recovering on the idyllic sun-drenched and remote Italian island of Pantelleria are disrupted by the unexpected visit of an old friend and his daughter (Ralph Fiennes and Dakota Johnson) – creating a whirlwind of jealousy, passion and, ultimately, danger for everyone involved.
Rated R. Running time 124 minutes.
