‘Womanimation’ At AS220
(6.25) AS220 hosts three screenings of the ‘Womanimation Film Festival’ Saturday on the main stage. A catered reception follows the final screening with DJ Madame B.
Presenting a select program of eleven short films from Europe, Asia, and North America, the festival blends styles such as traditional 2-d hand drawing, stop motion, and computer animation. With one world premiere, three US premieres, and seven New England and East Coast premieres, the festival offers a rare chance for local audiences to sample the world of women’s animation.Though never longer than 20 minutes, and sometimes under five, the films emphasize well-developed narratives. Themes run the gamut from more female-centric themes like motherhood, body image, and gender roles, to more universal themes like family relationships and the cycle of life.
Merging Arts has a list of the films here. Total run time is 86 minutes. Seen here is a still from ‘De Longues Vacances’ from Brussels. Motif RI interviewed event co-founder and co-programmer Toni Pennacchia.
