Providence-To-Newport Ferry Coming On Line
By July 1st? Not much to look at right now but plenty of workers were beavering about with trucks, pavers, and front-end loaders today. It could happen and it will be great to have the ferry back. Some details from the Providence Journal:
The ferry will run three round trips between Providence and Newport on weekdays and four round trips on weekends and holidays, according to a filing with the Public Utilities Commission. The fare will be $10 each way for adults and half price for seniors, children and disabled riders
The service is slated to run from July 1 though September 5.
SeaStreak will use a 149-passenger catamaran that was previously used on a Providence-to-Newport ferry route for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority between 2003 and 2008.
According to the article SeaStreak has “agreed to set up a barge just offshore of the Shooters site to load and unload passengers.” Okay, maybe a barge is okay for now.
Should I bother making my annual suggestion that we build a shore dinner hall on the footprint of the old club? Clam cakes . . . lobster rolls . . . stuffies . . . ice cold ‘Gansett . . . the view down the bay . . .
