Frankenstein At Avon
(10.25) Fire bad —that much we know. But who’s playing who in this National Theatre Live Encore Presentation? Actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternated roles for this National Theatre Live production back in 2011 and it’s not altogether clear which will be showing here tonight. This from the Avon website:
This thrilling production features Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch as Victor Frankenstein and his creation. Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered Creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale.
That makes this sound like the Cumberbatch-as-Creature version, but no promises. Roger Ebert attended the original live broadcast in 2011 (with Cumberbatch-as-Creature) and describes the production in great detail.)
Directed by Danny Boyle. Running time: 2 hours, 10 minutes.
