RI Comic Con — Downtown All Weekend
(11.13) Saturday is already sold out. The Rhode Island Comic Con (RICC) has become a very big deal. This year’s guest list has some major players: Christian Slater, Millie Bobby Brown, and Gal Gadot. Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy, Deadpool, and Dr. Who are represented, as is Saved by the Bell. And Jon Heder and some Sharknado people. Events include: Photo ops and celebrity signatures, Star Wars trivia, sci-fi speed dating, Pokemon, MTG, and, on Friday night, “An Evening with Alice Cooper: “The Godfather of Shock Rock.”
Of course it’s all about the comics and seen here is the king, Stan Lee, on hand all three days. I am way out of my element on the whole comics thing, and I don’t want to make an ass of myself, but I like the movies and I did just see Stan Lee make his requisite cameo “Dr. Strange” as a bus passenger reading Aldous Huxley’s “The Doors of Perception.” The movie was visually compelling — in an M.C. Escher on mushrooms kind of way — but there was way too much of that Eastern philosophical gobbledygook for my taste. And it says something when a cloak is stealing the show. (I hope that cloak has an agent, his career is about to blow up.) And . . . Benedict Cumberbatch puts on an American accent which I found even more disorienting than the special effects. But I came to the conclusion that Mr. Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton should agree to reproduce at least once . . . for the benefit of science. It has to happen.
We will also see the introduction of the new Rhode Island-inspired comic “The Rhode Warrior.” (See ProJo)
The Comic Con always provides an entertaining pageant of cosplay enthusiasts and fans in and around the Convention Center downtown.
