59% Of Rhode Islanders Support Legal Marijuana
Every year support increases for ending marijuana prohibition and taxing and regulating it like alcohol. Regulate RI reports that 3 out of 5 Rhode Islanders now support legalizing marijuana for adult recreational use. The poll found that in Providence, support is at 62%. In Newport it’s 64%. And here’s a message for the House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello (D-Cranston) — who was reelected last November by a mere 65 votes — 58% of your constituents support legalizing marijuana. He must be urged to let this out of committee so it can be put to a vote.
According to the Providence Journal,
Public support for pot legalization has grown steadily in polls since the Marijuana Policy Project began surveying Rhode Islanders attitudes toward marijuana in 2012. At that time, 52 percent of voters supported legalization. The group’s last survey was conducted in 2015, when statewide support for legalization was reported at 57 percent.
But this marijuana is not going to legalize itself! People keep saying it’s only a matter of time, or it’s inevitable. But do not underestimate the power of inertia up at the state house. Your legislators need to hear from you! To that end Regulate RI has set up a simple TAKE ACTION! page with everything you need for making your voice heard.

Now that the people of Massachusetts have voted to legalize marijuana our legislators must realize that the landscape has changed. There may be a greater sense of urgency this year; they know there will be economic opportunities for the first out of the blocks. Real Democrats Rep. Scott Slater (D-Prov) and Sen. Josh Miller (D-Cranston) will be filing the legislation this week. They need your help.
Don’t just sit there, do something!
