Senate Committee Hearing, Bipartisan Russia Probe On C-Span 3
(3.15) Senator Whitehouse and Senator Lindsay Graham (SC-R) will be holding the first of a series of hearings on Russian election interference today. Four experts will be asked to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on crime and terrorism when “The Modus Operandi and Toolbox of Russia and Other Autocracies for Undermining Democracies Throughout the World” will be aired live on C-Span 3 (Cox78) this afternoon. According to Katherine Gregg at the ProJo,
“We have a witness who was the president of one of the countries that is most under the shadow of Russian interference and influence – Estonia – who can speak first hand about the mischief that they were up to in his country. … We have the author of the Center for Strategic and International Studies report … on the election-interference operation that the Russians run throughout their sphere of influence.
“We then have a cyber expert from a center at Harvard that works on cyber scecurity issues, to talk about how the attributing of the cyber attacks in the United States to Russia can be justified … and then we have a former head of the Department of Justice’s national security division … to talk about the areas in which this conduct may violate existing U.S. law, and the holes in U.S. law that Russians can exploit to engage in election manipulation in the United States.”
Whitehouse said it remains to be seen if the alleged actors in the alleged hacking and misinformation campaign will be called to testify, or subpoenas issued. “That is going to be very much Chairman Graham’s call,” said Whitehouse, the committee’s ranking Democrat.
Gregg adds that there are no fewer than 5 senate committees, in addition to this subcommittee, investigating the Russian meddling and hacking of the 2016 election.
The committee website has info on today’s four witnesses and will livestream the hearing.
