New John Waters Book — RISD Commencement Speech
“This is the end of your juvenile delinquency and the beginning of your adult disobedience.” So said John Waters in 2015 to RISD’s graduating class. His new book “Make Trouble” is a reprint of that commencement address. (Hey Class of 2015, guess what you’re getting for birthday/christmas/hannukah/anything.)
The Sunday New York Times recently profiled Waters at home in Baltimore and asked about his writing space and “advice for young artists about setting up a home.”
I think it’s very important to have a trash can from a writer you like. I tried to buy Ingmar Bergman’s trash can at his auction, but it went for too much. This trash can is Patrick White’s, the novelist. So my bad ideas go in the same place that Patrick White’s bad ideas went in. That way you don’t feel bad. You roll it up, throw it in and go, “So did Patrick White.”
The video of his speech has been viewed over 100,000 times.
