Greenway Cleanup — San Souci Drive
(5.12) The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council has another greenway cleanup scheduled for Friday, this time along little San Souci Drive. (Meet at 50 Valley Street.)
The United Way of Rhode Island (UWRI), Olneyville Square Businesses and the WRWC River Rangers are teaming up to clean up San Souci Drive behind Olneyville Square! Big changes are on the way for this important area. Join us to paint, mulch, clean up and get ready for what’s coming next – the next leg of improved bike path in Olneyville!
Free T-shirts and refreshments for volunteers. Tools and gloves will be provided, but bring your own if you’ve got them.
That’s the dreaded and highly invasive Japanese knotweed in the foreground of this photo. It is not unattractive but knotweed spreads quickly, forming dense thickets which push out native species. Don’t know what eradication efforts are being contemplated here.
Originally indigenous to Japan, knotweed was originally shipped westward by [botanist Philipp] von Siebold, and, at the last count, was reported to be undermining man-made structures in some 26 European countries and 36 American states.
