Check out the opening of a new exhibit, The Museum of Small Finds, at the Machines With Magnets Gallery in Pawtucket. Artist Josie Morway sure knows how to write an intriguing press release,
My piece for this show is my first ever sculptural experiment. Also my first full collaboration with the talented and well-dressed Jay Nutini. We made this thing. It’s not a painting of a bird. Please come out on Friday night and help us figure out what to make of it.
Alrighty then. I think I will.

A new exhibit at The Holden Street Gallery opens tonight. Running from October 3rd to the 24th, the show features new works by Jennifer Daltry whose atmospheric and labor-intensive pen-and-ink drawings, etchings and prints suggest such influences as Edward Gorey, John Tenniel and Gustave Dore. The spare images that populate her small pieces are repeated in the large-scale canvas wall-hangings.

Friday opening at YES Gallery

Pure/Play opens this Friday October 3rd and features the work of two wild and crazy guys, Tom McAleer and Doug Desjardins. It will be a fun reunion as Tom, Doug and I all used to show together at Mixed Media Gallery on Block Island.
The two of them are playful, prolific artists who have mastered the art of putting aside self-consciousness and letting pure expression flow through. Their colors, brushstroke and subject matter offer a real visual treat for the viewer, and inspire the artist in all of us. Hope to see you there! P.S. It’s from 6:00-8:30 and, as always, will be a great party. For more info contact yesgalleryandstudio@gmail.com or by phone at (401) 245-7174.

Chihuly and Macaulay at the RISD Museum
11AM ON

The Chace Center officially opens today, so head down to the RISD Museum to escape the drizzle and check out the fancy new galleries.
I’ve always been partial to the discreet Benefit Street museum entrances, but the new entry on South Main is a lot nicer-looking than I’d expected. My favorite thing about the museum, the little set of stairs on the side of the building, has become a more welcoming thoroughfare; there’s a gallery space in the museum now for student work; and RISDWorks has morphed into a real museum store (and now, thankfully, seems to be about 75% less relient on selling Family Guy merchandise.)

Someday My Prints Will Come
10AM ON
07/09/2008
BY
Matthew Lawrence
And, gentle readers, that day is today!
It’s the opening party for the first biennial AS220 Print Lottery. 200 prints from a whole bunch of artists. You can buy a lottery ticket for $75, and the prints will be dispersed at the end of the month. Proceeds go towards keeping the print shop running.
Of course, 200 printmakers celebrating with cake and beer will probably make for something of a claustrophobia-inducing situation at AS220. But if it gets to be too much you can head down the street to the Project Space, where there’s a retrospective of Pete Cardoso’s posters happening. I’ve always liked his prints–there’s one in my kitchen!–and so that’ll surely be worth checking out as well.

Whatever happened to that dude who posted about comix weekly???? Well, whatever.
[Answer from David: He's co-managing my campaign. Yeah, that's how we roll. But I'll give him the day off for this.]
This SATURDAY, July 19th is the opening of Hera Gallery’s 30 Days + 24 Hours: All-Rhode Island Comic Book Challenge/Graphic Novel Exhibition. Which consists of way more than JUST an opening — the 24hr challenge begins noon on the 19th… the official/traditional ‘opening’ reception is 6pm-9pm, and the challenge ends the 20th at noon. During those 24 hours, food will be served, music will be heard, movies will be watched, Alec Thibodeau will read comix, and a slew of random Rhode Islanders will draw them.
Hera Gallery is located at 327 Main Street, in Wakefield RI 02880-0336

To get your ass down to Wakefield, take the #66. Apparently it goes right by the gallery.

Steven Pennell, a gentleman and a scholar, is looking for all types of media to include in the URI Feinstein gallery’s summer show. Great chance to get your work into the downtown windows without being a Yale grad (yes, that’s a swipe at the fact that so many of the art windows are unrepresentative of the local artists who live here).

Many of you know that, for the past two years, I have been facilitating arts and writing workshops at the Rhode Island Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) through Space in Prison for the Arts and Creative Expression (SPACE).
This Sunday, May 4, SPACE will be opening its annual exhibit of art and writing from the ACI. The exhibit will take place in the Youth Gallery at AS220, 115 Empire Street from 4 PM to 7 PM.
In addition to displaying art and writing, we will be reading selections of poetry written by the men and women who participate in our workshops. We will also be distributing our annual Zine, a collection of their work. Refreshments will be served. If you can’t make it on Sunday, the exhibit will be up in the AS220 Youth Gallery through July; please stop in and check it out!
More about SPACE and the exhibit after the jump.
