Throw a better pool party!!!! We could’ve had a more fun time at Mirabar on any random Tuesday night. In fact, we did — this week.
And is music too much to ask for? Even some ABBA would’ve sufficed — certainly better than the argon buzz of the GTECH logo that loomed over the ‘festivities.’
BAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is out of a Steel Yard press release that I should’ve posted a few days ago:
The Steel Yard’s Olneyville Trash Cans find a Home
The Steel Yard announced today that artist Lu Heintz’s sculptural trash cans will be installed in Olneyville, the neighborhood for which they were initially intended.
The industrial arts-focused non-profit spent many months negotiating a new location for the cans after the original clients were unwilling to accept the cans due to differences between the design concept they approved and the final product. Public input helped the Steel Yard create a short list of possible locations that were considered based on criteria including public accessibility and the potential for stewardship….
The cans will be installed on Aleppo Street, a road that runs between Riverside Park, a reclaimed brownfield, and Riverside Townhomes affordable housing for Olneyville residents.

Music Friday at RISD this week
11AM ON

BY
Dave Segal
I finally made it by for last month’s MF. It was okay — I think I’ll give it another go this week, but it was a bit — how to say this tactfully… stuffier than I’d hoped for.
6:15pm
The second Friday of every month the Museum’s Main Gallery transforms into a funky lounge for an after-work alternative that features cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, art and music. Socialize with old friends and meet new ones. Enjoy special signature cocktails and door prizes. Museum members: $5; non-members: $8. Age 21 and over. PWCVB members and RISD|CE students receive the Museum member rate.Warm up to the sounds of Superchief Trio, featuring the two-fisted piano of Keith Munslow, the red-hot trombone of Pam Murray, and the frenzied percussion of Johnny Cote as they sing and play a mixture of original music and classic Swing/New Orleans R&B/Boogie Woogie. This band was the winner of Providence Phoenix’s Best Local Jazz Act in 2005.

Dale Chihuly to open RISD Museum

Dale Chihuly, he of the crazy glass sculptures, will be opening up the new RISD Museum in September.
Renowned artist Dale Chihuly [RISD MFA ’68, Ceramics] will create a special site-specific installation as the inaugural exhibition for the new special exhibition gallery in the Chace Center. Chihuly at RISD will be complemented by an exhibition of work from other glass artists who were students during or after Chihuly’s time at RISD.
I’m pretty sure that his nearest-by large-scale piece is at Mohegan Sun.

Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995)
4PM ON
05/12/2007
BY
Beth Comery
This is Beth Comery’s first go at it, in blog form. But she’s known and loved by the legions of loyal readers of her weekly screeds in the “Scrabble Club Newsletter.”
Fans of ‘Village of the Damned’, or anyone who thinks children are generally creepy and may mean us harm, should head over to the Bell Gallery on College Street. The show, featuring 3 photographers, is called ‘Kids’ and should be seen by any couple contemplating starting a family. Perhaps the best known of the artists is Jill Greenberg who explains that she gets her subjects to scream and cry by taking their candy away — a trick she totally stole from my dad (who was not a photographer).
These pictures are very large and it costs nothing to get in, so this is a great value. The show is scheduled to end on December 21st.

AS220 Community Print Shop: December Schedule

DECEMBER 2007!!! The brutal month before JANUARY 2008, horrifying!!!!! The print shop still breathes, heavy, thirsting for new friends and classmates. Clawing through the ink-soaked rags of downtown Providence, drooling education and reeking of a strange allure, a distorted, musky scent, familiar and yet distant, the indescribable waft of learning and fun, disgusting yet delicious. What fate will the print shop hold?? What crusty tears have dried on thine eyes of lead?
Located at 95 Mathewson street, two floors above the darkened hallows of Local 121 in the castle Dreyfus, the print shop lays in patient wait. Wait for what? For WHOM? Only time will tell. more »

Jacqueline Ott at 5 Traverse

BY
Tim Blankenship
November 2nd through January 1st , 2007
Opening reception: November 2nd, 5-8 PM
5 Traverse is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Providence-based artist Jacqueline Ott. Her dynamic works on paper twist simple combinations of pattern into charged pearls. Ott’s mechanical process gives way to the human hand as her colors tender theory. Ott has put together a body of work that is as minimal as it is expansive.
Jacqueline Ott received her BFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. She has exhibited extensively across New England, receiving acclaim in the press and grants from the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Ms. Ott has works in corporate, private, and museum collections.
5 Traverse is open Wednesday-Sunday 12-6 and by appointment. For additional information or visuals, please contact the gallery at 401.278.4968.
