Tonight: Rainbro, Joe Grimm

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

joegrimm_l

Sooth your synapses with some decidedly non-traditional music of the electronic/experimental/just plain weird variety tonight at AS220. Joseph Grimm (aka Wind-Up Bird) creates lengthy sonic landscapes of blips and droning pulses, imagine a strobe light as the slowly setting sun. On the beautiful “Voice And Sine Wave” the meditative, resonant frequencies seem to exist in your inner ear only, like glorious, harmonic tinnitus.  Meanwhile, Rainbro exists at the slighty buzzier, bonkier end of the experimental spectrum, sounding at times like the crazier bits of Nintendo game soundtracks stuck forever in their degraded 8-bit loops. Rainbro, Joe Grimm, Young Male @AS220 10pm, $5

Death Vessel, Callers at AS220 Tonight

Friday, March 7th, 2008

Callers

Joel Thibodeau was a Providence person but now he’s out in the Pacific Northwest somewhere, making cool music though. His thing, Death Vessel, with its twisting and turning eclectic prog-folk, features various assorted guest musicians of the local and non-local variety. DV have put out stuff on Sub Pop and Kill Rock Stars, so you know, legit. Callers are dark, dreamy, and beautiful. Small, intimate acoustic noir and stormy vocals, I’d classify it as wine-drinking music. Gardening-at-night music. Micah Blue Smaldone and Quaky Blue share the bill. AS220, 9pm $7

Live Tonight: Black Clouds

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

blackclouds_l

Primitive, brutal, and relentless, Providence’s Black Clouds bring their grinding stomp-blues to AS220 tonight. They exist somewhere between an adolescent Jon Spencer in a wind tunnel and Nirvana’s Bleach, what with the screaminess and all. Absolutely glorious in their sheer volume alone, and after the jump some live footage that pretty much sums it up. As for the rest of the bill, that’s somewhat less clear. Over at Lots Of Noise they’re saying Boston’s Hospital Rats, White Load and New Haven’s Estrogen Highs while at AS220 they’re claiming Brooklyn’s Live Fast Die and Jersey’s Home Blitz with White Load. My money’s on LON. AS220 Black Clouds, others, 9pm $5 (more…)

Geek Dinner tonite

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Providence Geek Dinner Providence Geeks are meeting tonight at AS220. 5:30-9pm+

Andrew Schiller, founder of Woonsocket-based Location Inc./NeighborhoodScout.com, a nationwide neighborhood search engine for home buyers and movers with 1.8 million unique visitors last year, will be talking about their patented search technology that answers the first question most home buyers have: “Where should I focus my house hunt?”

The audience will try the algorithm by ‘building their ideal neighborhood’ on the site, and finding the local neighborhood that best matches the ideal imaginary one. A sneak peek at NeighborhoodScout v2 will reveal flash-based maps, data mining that has produced new levels of granularity for neighborhood crime, appreciation rate, and school ratings, and ‘smart search’ taken to a new level. Andrew will be joined by Andy Couture, VP of Business Development for the company.
