Let’s Honor The Veterans

But let’s stop creating them. The BBC production ‘The Last Day of World War I’ features Joseph Persico whose book ‘Eleventh Month, Eleventh Day, Eleventh Hour: Armistice Day, 1918, World War I and Its Violent Climax’ inspired the show. The armistice document had been signed well before that now-famous date and time, but because of the resonance of the whole ‘eleven’ thing it was not to take effect until then. In the intervening time, despite the generals being completely aware that the war was finished, they kept sending men to the front — losing thousands more lives in that last futile spasm of insanity. Video from the show after the jump. (Shame on BBC America for not running this today. Too busy with ‘How Clean is Your House?’)
