Dance To Kick Off The HealthAccessRI Campaign
7AM ON
12/12/2009
BY

HealthAccessRI (which David Segal wrote about here) is the nation’s first primary care subscription program, homegrown right here in Rhode Island. Essentially, it’s a network of primary care doctors offering affordable primary care to patients who lack health insurance or have high-deductible insurance. And HealthAccessRI is launching a campaign to grow to a total of 10,000 members by December of 2010.
This is quite an ambitious goal, considering that HealthAccessRI only has 500 members now, and is therefore hoping to increase its membership by twenty-fold in one year. But should it reach this goal, it will have the leverage to convince a big insurer (like Blue Cross Blue Shield, or perhaps somebody new) to sell inexpensive high-deductible major medical insurance in Rhode Island. The combination of primary care from HealthAccessRI and high-deductible insurance would give Rhode Islanders the health care we need — world-class primary care from our family doctors in our neighborhoods, and financial protection in case of illness or injury.
But about the dancing — Saturday, December 12th is destined to be quite a night. Not only will we be dancing to the music of the illustrious DJ duo Micah Jackson in the beautiful 28 Wolcott Space (sustainably designed by Providence’s John Jacobson) and doing all of the above for free, but (as if you needed more incentive) we’re gonna be doing it to kickoff the HealthAccessRI 10,000 by December 2010 campaign. To keep up with the campaign, fan HealthAccessRI on Facebook and follow it on Twitter.
So come to the party and invite your friends. Event details are right here on Facebook and also on the HealthAccessRI website. Managing Director of HealthAccessRI Dr. Michael Fine speaks at 10pm.
Free, Saturday, December 12th, 28 Wolcott Space, doors open at 9pm, speaker at 10pm, DJ all night

Ray Anderson Speaks Today on Sustainability in Corporate America
10PM ON
20/05/2009
BY
Ben Jones
Noted sustainability champion, Ray Anderson, will speak today at the Rhode Island Convention Center from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. The event is sponsored by The Apeiron Institute for Sustainable Living.
I had a chance to hear this engaging and inspiring speaker in 2006 at the Society for Business Ethics annual conference. As chairman of Interface Carpets he transformed his company through a vision of sustainability. Since 1995 his company has increased sales by nearly 50% while saving more than $336 million by significantly reducing the use of fossil fuels and the company’s contributions to global landfills.
Mr. Anderson experienced an epiphany when he first read Paul Hawken’s The Ecology of Commerce seeking inspiration for a speech on the company’s environmental vision. Fifteen years later Interface is significantly reducing its environmental impact — carpet manufacturing being a particularly petroleum-intensive industry — through the pioneering of new technologies which reduce waste and harmful emissions, and increasing his use of renewable materials and sources of energy.
Anderson will discuss his book Mid-Course Correction, which chronicles his transformation into an environmentalist and how he turned his company around. Anderson has appeared in the 2004 Canadian documentary “The Corporation” and served as co-chairman of the ‘President’s Council on Sustainable Development’. He was named one of TIME International’s ‘Heroes for the Environment’ in 2007.
5:30pm, Thursday, Rhode Island Convention Center, seating is limited - register here.

Milk and Cookies Gallery, 250 Main Street (in the Grant), Pawtucket RI is proud to present the illustration, toys, and mayhem of Jesse Ledoux.
The Rejects will open December 6th, from 7 to 10pm. Jesse LeDoux worked for many years as an art director for Seattle-based Sub Pop Records where he created iconic album and poster artwork for such artists as the Shins, Iron and Wine and Death Cab for Cutie before leaving in 2004 to focus on his client-based and personal work. Parallel to working on commercial illustration and collaborative projects for such clients as Nike, Kidrobot, Giro, Penguin UK, Rome Snowboards and Target, he has exhibited internationally. Most recently, his work was included in the Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial (2007) and an installation at the University of Maryland (2008). A large-scale mural of his work can currently be seen in downtown Denver, Colorado. He currently lives and works in Providence, RI.
