Does that sign say “bacon wrapped pork meatloaf” and. . . “pork bellies with cheddar cheese sauce?!” Why, bless their thumping little hearts, it’s like the last 30 years never happened. The hell with turkey, this is what I want for Thanksgiving. Hewtin’s Dogs Mobile is a moveable feast so maybe I can get them to park in my sister’s driveway next Thursday. In truth, you can find them on Saturdays outside the Hope Artiste Village in conjunction with the Wintertime Farmers’ Market. (The Hewtin’s truck can be found Wednesday through Friday, 11:30am to 2:30pm, on North Main Street in Providence just south of Smith Street.)
*okay, last stupid pun on ’seitan’ I promise

Head over to Hope Artiste Village today for the first open market of the season. This was a huge hit last winter — the space is ideal — and each month they change things up with seasonal offerings. (The market will be held every Saturday through May.) This is a short list of what is typically available.
. . . lettuces, arugula, bok choi, kale, collards, cabbage, chard, apples, cider, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, leeks, garlic, radishes, fresh herbs, beets, carrots, parsnips, turnips, winter squash, oysters, beef, pork, Narragansett Creamery cheese, eggs, honey, maple syrup, jams, jellies, artisan breads and pastries, gluten-free breads, tortillas, chocolates, fair-trade coffee hot or by the pound, gifts for your favorite foodie. . .
For directions and a complete list of vendors go to Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers’ Market.

The RIC Farmer’s Market is back! Every Wednesday through the fall, rain or shine, the market serves the Fruit Hill area from 3:30-6:00 p.m. (I hear they’ll be better this year about sticking around up until 6:00, given that a few times last year I arrived around 5:30 only to see half the stuff already being packed up.)
Typical vendors include several fresh farm produce stands, Rhode Islin ice cream, Yacht Club soda, and value-added goodies like soaps, jams, flowers, doggie treats and chocolates. Yum.
Rhode Island College, 600 Mt. Pleasant Ave., Providence in Parking Lot A (the closest one to Mt. Pleasant), Wednesdays through October 14th, 3:30-6:00 p.m.

A little rain never really hurt anybody, and farmers don’t even notice a little drizzle like this. They are out there right now setting up their tables. So don’t be a baby, get over there and buy delicious reasonably-priced locally-grown food. And actually, there might be a break in the steady rain just about exactly for this. Kiosks and tents are set up next to Burnside Park, north of Kennedy Plaza. More info at Farm Fresh Rhode Island. (Do the denizens of City Hall know that fresh, ripe tomatoes are being sold right outside the front door? That doesn’t seem wise.)

Ohmigod, everyone STOP freaking out about snow. The farmers and food artisans of Rhode Island aren’t worried. About 30 of them will be at the Wintertime Farmers’ Market in Pawtucket selling an amazing variety of fruits, veggies, etc.

Mount Pleasant and Elmhurt folks, take note: Today marks the very last farmer’s market at Rhode Island College (unless, of course, it becomes an annual tradition). It’s small, it’s cute, it’s fresh, it’s local. It’s a win-win.
