Animation Elation

11AM ON 17/04/2009
BY Annie Messier

j0395710 Yay for another cool RIC event! The college’s film studies program has organized a big ol’ Festival of Contemporary Animation, which is co-curated by Maya Allison, director of Five Traverse Gallery, and Jo Dery, curator of the Magic Lantern cinema project, to showcase animated films by contemporary artists both near and far.

Tonight, catch some highlights of the amazing 2008 Ottawa Animation Festival AND the curators’ picks of funky films by various artists around the world, including what’s hailed as “a surprise animation” by Providence’s own Leif Goldberg (who just exhibited some pretty cool drawings, screenprints and paintings at the Stairwell Gallery).

Tomorrow night, stay local. New England artists Jo Dery, Dan Sousa, Lorelei Pepi and Nancy Andrews will present their short films and have a conversation with you lucky people about their work.

Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18, Sapinsley Hall in the Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts, Rhode Island College, 600 Mount Pleasant Ave., Providence; 7-9 p.m. both nights, free both nights

Festival Ballet Providence’s NUTCRACKER

12PM ON 05/12/2008
BY ben@gladworks.com

nutcracker Attention all art lovers — please help support ‘Festival Ballet Providence’ by attending The Nutcracker this holiday season. As the economy continues to falter, it is more important than ever to support local non-profit arts organizations — especially those whose performers depend on audience support for their livelihood. Art and culture serve as the foundation for any civilized, flourishing and progressive society. I am very much looking forward to seeing The Nutcracker this year.  Even though times are tough The Nutcracker will be an outlet for me personally.

December 12, 13, 14, Providence Performing Arts Center, 220 Weybosset Street

Friday 7:30pm, Saturday 2pm and 7pm, Sunday 1pm and 6:30pm

Tickets from $18 to $83, call 401.421.ARTS or order online at PPAC.

Student Rush tickets available 2 hours before curtain for a 50% discount. For a $10 discount per ticket, mention code word ‘Clara’ when ordering tickets. A magical holiday tradition that literally sparkles with Swarvoski crystals, stunning choreography, breathtaking costumes and majestic scenery.

2nd Biennial(ish) Rhode Island Artist’s Yankee Style Art Swap!

11AM ON 14/11/2008
BY Michaela Colette

Oh hey! This Saturday, November 15, 2008 (a.k.a, tomorrow) from 1pm - 5pm at AS220 (a.k.a 115 empire st, pvd, ri 02903), and for FREE (a.k.a zero (0) dollars) is the totally charming Yankee Art Swap. If you missed it last time (which I did), you should make sure to not miss it this time. Additionally, if you missed the print lottery and my transcendence of states through excessive liquid consumption last time I MC’d, you may have found your second opportunity (although hopefully not). whatever!!!! here’s the press release (or whatever!!!)! god!

“Bring a piece of original work for swappin’. Mickey Zacchilli will MC, and it’s gonna be awesome. The convoluted rules for a yankee-style swap are as such: each person who brings a piece of art gets a to draw a number. The person with the lowest number goes first and gets to choose from all of the pieces of art. We continue in numeric order but the following people not only get to pick from what remains out, BUT they can also choose from what anyone has already picked, yeah it’s like stealing –and that is the fun part. If and when your choice piece of art gets taken away from you, you may choose once again from the items out on the table, but you cannot steal from other people at this point, bummer. . . We go through everyone and finally we return to the first person, they can then choose from everyone else’s art!”

Rock the Boat! A BellaMinx Burly-Q Revue

7AM ON 13/08/2008
BY missb

Providence-based burlesque troupe BellaMinx Burly-Q presents Rock the Boat!, a full-scale variety show chock full of performers from all around Southern New England. BellaMinx is quickly making a name for themselves across Rhode Island with their high-quality displays of quick-witted satire and seduction – don’t miss out on the fun!

Join Providence’s Classiest Chassis on a burly-q cruise as they bid a fond farewell to summer with a full bill of burlesque, music, and comedy! Rock the Boat! will be held on Saturday, August 23rd at the Perishable Theatre (95 Empire Street) in Providence. There will be two shows: one at 7:30pm and a second at 10:00pm.

This eclectic live show, in the tradition of the variety shows of Vaudeville, will feature a myriad of performances: the Bob Fosse-inspired and titillating choreography of Briana ‘Miss B’ Masterson, burlesque performances by Providence’s own BellaMinx Burly-Q, comedic-musical duo the Steamy Bohemians, sideshow feats by the Human Floor, and world-fusion dance by Ximon. Rock the Boat! promises quality live entertainment unlike anything in the Providence area!

Tickets for this event are $20, and available at the door. Cash bar will be provided by Artini’s Café & Lounge. Partial proceeds from the show will benefit the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council. This is an 18+ event.
