Okay I know that this has already been mentioned but I am just reminding everyone out there that tonight at Firehouse 13 Japanther, What Cheer? Brigade, Ninjasonik, and Math The Band will be performing. Japanther (a super nice drum and guitar and loop duo/ardent Proviphiles) happen to be one of my all time favorite live shows, and What Cheer? Brigade is a damn close second. Check it out!
$8, 8pm, Firehouse 13, 41 Central Street, off Elmwood Avenue

National Grid Might Be My New Favorite Band Name

It’s Monday again, which means that it’s time to don your gayest kafiyyah* and get over to Wheels. This week: LLOVE, Hardontron, National Grid, and DJ 11:11. Trashy music, a really ugly bar, beer that’s not as cheap as it should be, cracky old gay people that won’t let a little noise get in the way of their crackiness, and carpeting. What more can you ask for on a school night?
Beth and I both failed miserably at alerting you about last week’s Mahi Mahi/Butcherings show (which was awesome, and which we both went to…oops) so hopefully this post will slightly redeem us.
(*Though I actually like the trend, I still think it’s weird that the hipsters of today are all into what Rachael Ray was wearing two years ago.)

Tonight: Boys Boys Boys and Lady GaGa

In what may be the first time I’ve ever actually wanted to go to the Dunk, animated heartthrobs New Kids On The Block are playing tonight with gay icon-in-waiting Lady GaGa. Those of you who have been following the two acts will surely have noticed that their albums were both produced by RedOne (which, with Autotuning, means every song sounds like someone at the beginning saying ‘red wine!’) and that one can’t play either of their YouTube videos without seeing previews for the other one.
Tickets go from $35 to $75 and they’re still available. I’m too broke to go, damn it anyway, but I’d kill to hear GaGa sing Boys Boys Boys from her album (listen below), or five thirty-something New Kids making their way through Cover Girl. I’m a little so-so on their new material, though Full Service could have been a great summer single (see further below) and the song they do with Akon is also pretty good.

Live Tonight: The Love Bullets
8PM ON

The Love Bullets don’t sound like any other band in Providence. Call it electronic guitar pastoral, or noir wave, or whatever. Their sound is a dark mix of chittering, gurgling electronic drums, synths, and burning, fuzz guitar all stretched out underneath a beautiful baritone voice almost Morrison-esque in its black crooning. The songs are slow burners, building themselves up slowly then bursting into brisk motorik paces, all clanging drumboxes and junked-up riffs. Check the Velvets/Doors/BRMC meltdown of their track “Castle” to catch the full drift. Rock-N-Roll Suicide at The Blackstone. DJs at 10pm, band at 11pm, FREE

Presented by B Sharp, the greatest music gear shop in the universe, tonight Boston’s Major Stars release their 6th (!) album, Mirror/Messenger (Drag City). Also on the bill, Brooklyn’s Sightings, whose newest Through The Panama (Load) was produced by Andrew WK. And that’s some cred, people. Hear a stream of the awesome track “Perforated” here. The Body, who’ve been making some stellar noise for a few years now are also on this gig, along with Xerxes, who get the ass end of the set so get there early.
AS220, Major Stars, Sightings, The Body, Xerxes, 9pm $7
