Today at 3 — Rally for Providence College janitors
7AM ON

Come out and support the PC janitors’ fight for a fair contract — and their fundamental right to organize, as they’ve been subject to harassment and intimidation by their bosses. 3PM at 549 River Avenue (outside of main entrance to PC).
This nonviolent rally will take place in remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr., whose speeches and public demonstrations remind us of the possibility of a peaceful, brotherly society and the creation of a beloved community.
We believe that:
- Hard work on campus deserves just compensation,
- All workers on campus should be able to adequately provide for their families based on their salaries,
- Janitors have the right to unite for a fair contract without fear of repercussion from their supervisors,
- Janitors are essential and invaluable members of our community.

RIFuture covers two unusually positive political developments today.
- National Grid, our electrical utility, has expressed a new willingness to enter long-term agreements with suppliers of renewable energy.
- The Providence City Council’s finance committee will be taking up the Living Wage Ordinance on Thursday. (Yours truly was recently informed that he’ll be giving the presentation on the ordinance’s behalf.)
There are links galore to info about both issues at RIFuture. Also on Thursday, the Providence City Council will take up a resolution in support of the janitors at Providence College, who are organizing for a fair new contract.

Carson Daly — likely the late-night host who’s least-able to wing it without his writers — is breaking ranks and crossing the picket line:
NEW YORK (AP) - NBC’s “Last Call with Carson Daly” is about to become the first late- night talk show to defy the writers strike and resume production. Daly, who is not a member of the Writers Guild, will begin taping new episodes of his Burbank-based show this week for airing next week, an NBC spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the Student Labor Alliance, RI Jobs with Justice, and others will be hosting Stewart Acuff. List 120 (64 College St.) at 8pm. Acuff is an awesome speaker, and the way-left national director of organizing for the AFL-CIO. With elections on the horizon, and the recent split in the AFL-CIO — because of organizing strategy — it’s an especially interesting time to here what he has to say.
As organizing director, Acuff coordinates strategies to help working men and women join and form unions across the federation’s 53 member unions. He has been a community organizer and union organizer for 25 years, except for a brief stint as a truck driver. From 1977 to 1982, he worked as a community organizer in Missouri, Texas, Tennessee and New Hampshire for organizations affiliated with ACORN and Citizen Action.
