Also This Evening, If You’re A Schmoozer

12PM ON 22/10/2009
BY Matthew Lawrence

Two other events tonight, which seem like they’d maybe have a big overlap in attendees if they weren’t being held at the exact same time in two different parts of town:

Providence Monthly is hosting a fundraiser at the Convention Center as part of the Fine Furnishings Show that’s going on there right now.  There’s food and schmoozing and, you know, hopefully wine.  And fine furnishings, I guess, which means maybe you can ogle fainting sofas while you’re eating food from El Rancho Grande.  Tickets are twenty-five smackeroos, which seems excessive, but the proceeds all go to New Urban Arts, which means it’s not excessive.  That starts at 6.

Also at 6, there’s a networking/socializing/schmoozing event at the Everyman (on Iron Horse Way, under the garish ALCO neon) for members of the arts community.  That one’s not raising money for anything, it’s just a chance for people to hang out and, I don’t know, do whatever it is people do at networking events.  (In my case, that generally means hovering over the food table, not speaking to anyone, and worrying that I’m underdressed.)  But, hey, half-price appetizers!

Providence Monthly Celebrates Itself

9AM ON 26/04/2009
BY Daily Dose

Congratulations to Providence Monthly who will be celebrating their 150th issue this week. Complete disclosure — occasional Daily Dose “contributor” and malcontent, John Taraborelli, is a PM honcho. Although, to be honest, the only contribution I can remember him making was over a year ago when he declared himself the Dose ombudsman and proceeded to pound us all into the dust. But he sure shows up to all the parties. Providence Monthly is throwing its own shindig this week (hot hors d’oeuvres I hope I hope) where they will presumably unveil their new full-color redesign complete with new logo. It’s a great little publication and they should all be proud of it. Well done.

you may need this someday

Jesse at NORMLCheck out the June issue of Providence Monthly (no reading it online, you must pick up a hard copy) for a piece on the Compassion Center Bill currently working its way through the RI legislature. Spearheading this effort is RIPAC executive director, Jesse Stout (seen here speaking at last year’s annual NORML convention). The bill would address the problem of safe access to medical marijuana for the patients and caregivers who are now legally allowed (under RI law anyway) to possess it. The new law would “direct the Department of Health to license and regulate a nonprofit distribution center, providing patients with a safe and reliable source of quality, affordable marijuana”.

The article is written by the always cuddly John Taraborelli, who may or may not be responsible for the photo caption identifying Mr. Stout as “The Mariju-Warrior”. (Did he say “ju”? I distinctly heard him say “ju”.)

To help support this initiative, go to RIPAC. Also read Mr. Stout’s June 2nd Pro-Jo op-ed piece.
