So You Think You’re So Smart?

9AM ON 23/11/2008
BY Beth Comery

win, place, show Prove it.  Come to the Wild Colonial Tavern for the famous (usually) twice-monthly Pub Quiz.  Form a team of one to four people and answer trivial questions in a variety of categories — history, 80’s television, current events, pilgrims, vampires, hockey, stupid celebrity baby names.  The final category is always 12 or so audible snippets of music you vaguely remember hating 20 years ago.  Cool prizes for win, place and show.  Beer on tap.

Pub Quiz tonight

3PM ON 09/11/2008
BY Beth Comery

dunce There is absolutely no public humiliation at the Wild Colonial Tavern pub quiz — only your teammates have to know that you thought NAFTA was mosquito repellent.  All answers are written down on pieces of paper and handed in, more or less anonymously. Thing is, nobody cares. You are there to have fun and drink draft beer and if the chicken nachos are on the menu, eat that.  Questions come in a variety of categories like current events, movies and sports — so you are bound to know something.  You must know something, right?  There is also a music category with 12 or so audible snippets designed to drive you bonkers.  Fun prizes for win, place and show.

Pub Quiz tonight. Come spend the evening arguing with your friends (who will definitely talk you out of the correct answer about 90% of the time).  Form a team of one to four people — just show up. The rules are explained as you go along. (FYI — the correct answer was ‘Pliny the Elder’.)

barroom brawl

“Be Nice or Leave” is the guiding philosophy at the Wild Colonial Tavern (T-shirts available).  On the whole the people that show up for the world-famous Pub Quiz are lovers not fighters (if by ‘lovers’ you mean ‘doughy liberal bed-wetters’).  But there was that one time.  Form a team of one to four people, join in the fun and win cool prizes.  There are several categories like current events, local trivia, movies… stuff like that.  And it always ends with a 12-question music category with audio snippets.  Some people worry that they will have to stand up in front of the room and make an ass of themselves looking stupid, and — like any other place where alcohol is served — you are free to do that.  But that has nothing to do with the quiz format — your  team simply writes its answers down on a piece of paper and hands it in. Great beer on tap.

the wild colonial Tonight is the world-famous Pub Quiz at the Wild Colonial Tavern.  The quiz-masters will ask 6 questions in each of a variety of categories like current events, local trivia, movies, sci-fi… or maybe a completely idiosyncratic made-up crazy topic.  There is always a visual hand-out and the final music category will consist of 12 audio bites.  Teams can be one to four people, and the rules are explained as you go along.  Just show up with your friends. Except for the occasional stray dart it’s a real good time.  Cool prizes, good beer on tap, and there is a mirror in the ladies’ room

Pub Quiz tonight

10AM ON 10/08/2008
BY Beth Comery

the wild colonial The holiday weekend notwithstanding, the famous Wild Colonial Tavern Pub Quiz will go on as scheduled (at least that’s what the person who answered the phone last night told me). Form your own team of one to four people and just show up. There are usually about 8 or 9 different categories of six questions each, and then the last category is music with about a dozen audio snippets you have to identify. The rules are explained as you go along. There are swell prizes for win, place and show (always the wildly popular WC pint glasses for coming in third).  In closing I would like to mention that this is one Irish bar that has gone ‘green’ in the best possible way — they have started recycling. Well done.

kid fight Tonight is Pub Quiz night at the famous Wild Colonial Tavern, voted the best bar in the universe every year since the beginning of time. Disputes are rare and always seem to involve squid. Mostly people just grumble and whine. (Wasn’t that a U2 album?) If you have never been, just show up. Form your own team of 1 - 4 people. The rules are explained as you play along. Categories of 6 questions each may cover topics such as sci-fi, pizza toppings, politics, the two Coreys…. I’m pretty sure ‘famous Irish-American boxers’ won’t be back… and it always ends with a 12 question audible music category. Cool prizes for win, place and show.

Pub Quiz Tonight

10AM ON 13/07/2008

the wild colonialIt’s time again for the famous Pub Quiz at the Wild Colonial. Teams can be from one to four people, no pre-registration required, just show up. Categories usually include current events, local trivia, maybe history or sports, and often some idiosyncratic or seasonal questions. And the 80’s rear their ugly head with some frequency. It always ends with a music category (12 or more audio clips) which will often hew to a theme that has been developed by the hilarious quiz masters. There are prizes for win, place and show. I don’t know what the prizes will be tonight, but the people over at Narragansett Beer have been coming up with some cool stuff lately. The artwork on their merch is a cut above the rest and they actually make T-shirts for the moderately-sized human (a.k.a. Europeans) as well as standard American (XXXXXXXL). So here is the free publicity that such promotional items are supposed to produce — happy to do it.

Pub Quiz Tonight

the wild colonial Yes, there are many claims on your time this evening. It is Father’s Day of course, but frankly, the average quiz-male seems barely capable of growing a beard much less fathering a child, so that shouldn’t be an issue. Also, what will Mo have on the telly tonight? The Celtics, being Irish-ish, certainly have a huge claim on Mo’s allegiance, but the theater people at Pub Quiz form a large and loyal customer constituency and may demand that he tune in ‘The Tonys’.

I’m gonna go out on limb and predict that the Celtics fans will overpower the Tony people. Game on.

think and drink It’s best to know a little bit about a lot of things if you want to finish in the money (and by money I mean t-shirts and glasses) at the famous Wild Colonial Pub Quiz. Come tonight and test your broad-but-superficial knowledge against other savants and know-it-alls. Yup, despite the holiday, it’s on. And if your mom don’t like it, tell her you hope to win her a real nice present (it helps if she’s a size XXXXL and likes Jose Cuervo). Form a team of one to four people who have a wide range of interests — good friends who will forgive you when you confidently talk them out of the correct answer. There will be several categories such as; current events, maybe sports, music (audible), maybe history or movies, and perhaps… tonight… mothers!

brainbrainbrain brain Shown here is the MRI of a contestant who has just won a free plate of nachos at the Wild Colonial pub quiz (all lit up is the lateral frito-lobe, tucked just below the medulla con cheso). In addition to the prizes awarded for win, place and show in the regular quiz, there is always an extra nacho question. Just drop in and form your own team — from one to four people — the rules are explained as you go along. (If you can’t even figure out how to play, you are probably in over your head.) Cool prizes, great beer on tap, and a mirror in the ladies’ room.
