Attention Entrepreneurial Types

for rent

In case any potential small business owners out there aren’t so enthused by the idea of opening up shop in  the cold caverns of Westminster Street, there’s at least one other option: 281 Thayer, which has been vacant since Tom’s Tracks closed last month after 23 years in business.

As someone who grew up buying records and CDs at Tom’s, the creaky floors and strange food smells from next door have always meant good times and good music, and it would be the ideal place for a new little store that appeals to college kids. After all, Brown students rarely leave the hill, and the space is about nine feet away from Urban Outfitters, so there’s kind of a captive audience, as long as you’re not trying to sell anything as unhip as, say, music.

Something new and exciting needs to happen on Thayer Street. That new frozen yogurt place in the old ATM lobby looks awesome, but I can’t help feeling it won’t last long. (Seriously, who opens a frozen yogurt place in a college neighborhood three days before Christmas?) And besides Blue State, nothing exciting has come to Thayer since, oh, about five years ago.

  1. it’s gotten so cut-throat. it was just a few years ago that sushi xpress opened, but forgot to put the “p” on their awning.
