But things are looking up for all women tired of getting schtupped by The Man. President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law yesterday, legislation that should loosen up the statute of limitations problems Ledbetter ran into with her pay discrimination suit. In ruling against Ledbetter, the Roberts Court found that she had not filed suit in a timely manner, despite her testimony that she did not know about the pay differential. In a statement on its own website, Goodyear Tire & Rubber suggests that it has no policy prohibiting employees from discussing their salaries. Imagine being on a new job and within the first year you start asking your coworkers how much money they make. Yeah, that would go over great.
There is evidence (lots of smiling) that Ms. Ledbetter has been really enjoying herself since her defeat in the court system — the eponymous legislation and getting to hang with Obama has all been kind of cool. But still, should Goodyear just get off the hook? I for one think I will satisfy my tire and rubber needs elsewhere. Join me in my boycott of Goodyear Tires, also sold as Dunlop and Kelly.
